The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that modifying existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for glyphosate in various crops poses no risk to consumer health. This opinion follows a request from the European Commission to reassess MRLs in light of revised toxicological reference values.
EFSA evaluated residue data submitted by industry applicants and determined that estimated exposure remains well below the acceptable daily intake (ADI) and acute reference dose (ARfD) for all population groups. This assessment aligns with EFSA’s 2015 conclusion that glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer or DNA damage, and with its broader 2017 review of pesticide residue risks.
The decision supports the continued safe use of glyphosate within authorized levels across the EU, though EFSA also recommends further data collection for long-term monitoring.
